Strong Public Schools Require Investment, Transparency and Accountability

Public education is one of the most important investments we make in our community. Our schools help children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to build their futures.

As a Newmarket resident for more than 17 years and a mother of four children who attended public schools, I have a personal connection to the education system. My experience volunteering on school councils has also shown me how much parents, educators, education workers and community members contribute to school life.

I believe we must protect the strength of public education by making thoughtful decisions about resources, listening to the people closest to students and being transparent about the choices we make.

School boards face complex responsibilities. They must manage budgets, maintain school buildings, support staffing, respond to enrolment pressures and provide programs and services for students with a wide range of needs.

These responsibilities require difficult decisions. That makes transparency and accountability especially important.

Families deserve to understand the priorities guiding board decisions and how those decisions may affect student learning, safety and well-being. Education workers deserve to have their professional experience and concerns considered. Students deserve a system that keeps their needs at the centre of discussions.

Budget decisions are not simply numbers on a page. They can influence the availability of classroom support, special education services, learning resources and the condition of school facilities.

That is why I believe decisions about staffing and spending should be examined carefully, with attention to both immediate needs and long-term consequences.

As trustee, I would ask questions about how resources are allocated, what evidence supports proposed decisions and how the board measures their impact. I would advocate for clear public communication and meaningful opportunities for families and community members to contribute to discussions.

I also believe we must be realistic about the role of a trustee. Individual trustees do not independently control the board’s budget or make every operational decision. Trustees work collectively through the board’s governance processes, establish policy and strategic priorities, and provide oversight.

Responsible leadership means understanding those responsibilities, asking difficult questions respectfully and working collaboratively toward solutions.

I do not believe that strengthening public education should be about blaming individuals. Teachers, education workers, school administrators, families and trustees all have different responsibilities, but we share an interest in helping students succeed.

Our focus should be on identifying what students need, understanding where the challenges are and working together to improve outcomes.

Newmarket families deserve public schools that are safe, inclusive, well-supported and focused on learning. Achieving that requires investment, responsible stewardship and a willingness to listen when people raise concerns.

Strong schools do not happen by accident. They are built through collaboration, thoughtful decisions, transparency and a shared commitment to every student.
